Description

Despatches from Governor Sir James Cockburn as well as letters from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda. Despatches are described at item level; letters from offices and individuals are not and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • Treasury (Mr Till's complaint regarding duty, transport of provisions, seizure of a sloop, governor's rations, payment of the governor's private secretary, pay of certain boatmen, investment of money from the sale of land, Captain Bazalgette's wife's claim to certain land, payment of Chief Justice Esten's salary);
  • Admiralty (Act affecting the sale of prize property, printed copy of an address concerning the trade and welfare of St George, 'American Blacks' who sought British protection on Cumberland Island, communication with Sir George Cockburn, proposal to establish the Colonial Marines in Bermuda, return of the 'Third or Colonial Battalion of Royal Marines', cost of Major General Horsford's passage, necessity of a military force on Ireland Island);
