Description

Despatches from Lieutenant Governor George Horsford and Governor Sir James Cockburn as well as letters from 'offices' (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda. Despatches are described at item level; letters from offices and individuals are not and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • R Chapman (arms for British service);
  • Commander in Chief (construction of an officer's barracks, proposed use of 'Negroes' from the southern United States for the service of the West India Regiment, passage of a detachment of the 102nd Regiment);
  • Treasury (erection of temporary barrack and hospital, temporary quarters for officers, position of commissary of accounts, shipment of stores, bills drawn by the lieutenant governor);
  • Admiralty (use of Naval boats for the Civil and Military Departments, state of the Ordnance stores and magazines, protection of the transports conveying the 102nd Regiment from Bermuda to Halifax);
  • William Smith (requests government appointments for his two sons);
  • Transport Office (passage of 40 men);
  • Army Pay Office (appointment of the resident paymaster);
  • Storekeeper General's Office (stores shipped for 'the use of Indians to the southward');
  • George Horsford (accounts current of sale of Colonial Secretary's land, position of general officer, address from the Legislative Council at the end of his administration of the government);
  • Cox & Company (Major General Horsford's salary as Acting Governor);
  • Alexander Cochrane, Vice Admiral (shipment of stores);
  • A J Guitard (petition and documents of merchants John Wood and John Davidson of Bordeaux concerning the capture and recapture of the ship Fame)
