Description

Despatches from Sir James Cockburn, governor of Bermuda (items 1-15), William Smith, officer administering the government (items 16-21), and George Horsford, acting governor (items 22-46) as well as letters from 'offices' (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda. Despatches are described at item level; letters from offices and individuals are not and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • Francis Forbes, Attorney General (expiration of his leave of absence);
  • General Post Office (service of the mail ship to Bermuda);
  • Treasury (payment of the governor's private secretary, accounts of W Tucker, governor's salary, governor's instructions, petition on behalf of the widow and family of Samuel Trott, seizure of the brig Legal Tender, number of men stationed at Bermuda);
  • Board of Ordnance (Captain Cunningham's military defence report, Bermuda's defences, proposed defence works);
  • George Horsford (island's defences);
  • Freeling Murray (foreign vessels anchored at Bermuda);
  • Admiralty (passage for General Horsford and his family, need to reinforce the garrison, 'ruinous state' of the fortifications, 102nd Regiment's departure from Guernsey, passages of Sir James Cockburn and Major General Wallace, list of people on HMS Diadem including names of Bermudian slaves found in the American schooner Baltimore, granting of licences to import flour and provisions from the United States);
  • J D Short, Surgeon to the Forces (governor's health);
  • Commander in Chief (102nd Regiment's departure from Guernsey);
  • Sir James Cockburn (payment of his private secretary, copy of a petition of on behalf of the widow and family of Samuel Trott, case of the brig Legal Tender);
