Description

Despatches from Samuel Trott, officer administering the government (items 1-26) and Sir James Cockburn, governor of Bermuda (items 27-35) as well as letters from 'offices' (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda. Despatches are described at item level; letters from offices and individuals are not and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • John Hodgson (petition against him by some Assembly members, extract from a private letter from Edward Cooke, request to return to Bermuda, salary of the chief justice, list of Council members, exoneration from charges against him, remuneration for expenses, transfer of gunboats);
  • John Goutston Price Tucker (record of his and his family's service to the British government, requests appointment as a governor in the West Indies);
  • Admiralty (extension of the naval establishment at Ireland Island, passage of Governor Sir James Cockburn);
  • Treasury (general instructions for George Damerum as Acting Commissary General at the Bahamas and Bermuda, transfer of gunboats from the government to the Naval Department, bills drawn by President Samuel Trott, dismissal of Mr Fisher from the commissariat, petition of Chief Justice James Christie Esten for payment of his salary);
  • Sir James Cockburn (salary, military resources in Bermuda);
  • Privy Council Office (petition against Governor Hodgson regarding the appointment of a Treasurer);
  • John Warren (land in Halifax, Stowe Wood's letter regarding duty on exports from Turks Island, petition from 'free blacks' James Darrell, Jacob Pitcarn and Daniel Melliroy concerning land ownership);
  • Ordnance Office (construction of military defence on Ireland Island, supplies requested by Storekeeper Simon Fraser, Bermuda's defences);
  • Commander in Chief (arrival of a detachment of the 98th Regiment);
  • Daniel Leonard (requests to meet with the Earl of Liverpool, petition outlining his case);
  • General Post Office (establishment of a post office in Bermuda)
