Description

Despatches from Governor William Campbell, Governor James Crawford, Acting Governor Henry Tucker, and Governor George Beckwith as well as letters from various 'offices' (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from officers and individuals is not and correspondents and subjects are as follows and described at item level:

  • John Brickwood, Agent (Governor Campbell's death, address from the House of Assembly with complaints against the revenue officers and asking for a Customs House in Hamilton, use of Bermuda's harbours by the Navy, building of warships, state of island's defences in times of war);
  • John Irving, 47th Regiment, Commander of Troops (Governor Campbell's death);
  • Dawson Kelly, Governor's Private Secretary (Governor Campbell's death, memorial concerning his former commission as a captain in the 8th Regiment of Militia in Ireland, requests employment);
  • I Chester [?] (destitution of Governor Campbell's widow);
  • Lord Galloway (recommends a pension for Governor Campbell's widow);
  • George Beckwith (suggests giving Bermuda's governor the rank of brigadier general, formation of a company of volunteers from the militia, import duties, legislative practice, payment of bills by the Treasury);
  • James Crawford (treatment of certain French passengers, privateering, Court of Admiralty, provisions, garrison);
  • Robert Mackenzie (enquiry regarding Major Durnford);
  • R P Arden (appeals in prize causes);
  • Pay Office, Horse Guards (increase of pay to Paymaster Fisher).
