Description

Despatches from T E Fell, colonial secretary and acting governor of Barbados (CO 28/294/1-19) and Charles Richard Mackey O'Brien, governor (CO 28/294/20-41), in continuation of CO 28/293, as well as letters received from various government offices (departments), other organisations and individuals during 1918. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from Offices (much of which relates to the despatches sent from the governor and acting governor in CO 28/293) is not. Correspondents and subjects covered are as follows: Offices (Government Departments):

  • Crown Agents (C H Clarke's scholarship);
  • Foreign Office (enemy correspondence from Brazil and Argentina, transfer of schooner Lilian Blauwelt to French flag, G L Livingstone former US consul at Swansea, repatriation of Mrs Aleatha Thompson and Mrs Selina M Sealy, censorship of mails for South America, diversion of ships to St Thomas for coaling, status of Finnish vessels flying Russian flag);
  • Medical advisers (permission for Miss Thorne to proceed to Barbados);
  • Board of Trade (transfer of British vessels to foreign flags, Railway Act 1917, G A Sealey, importation of goods of German origin);
  • Treasury (interest of Miss Constance Louise Ashby and Mrs Watts in Alexander Ashby's bequest);

  • West Indian Contingent Committee (demobilisation of men sent by the Barbados Citizens' Contingent Committee and the Trinidad Merchants' and Planters' Contingent Committee [with printed lists of men and units in which serving]).
