Description

Despatches from James Shaw Hay, governor of Barbados (items 1-9 and 23-116 ), and from deputy governor Paton (items 10-22) sent between June and December 1892, together with correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and from individuals on matters relating to Barbados sent during the year. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from offices and individuals is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Agents (Bridgetown harbour improvements, repatriation of two distressed Barbadians);
  • Board of Trade (details of differences between Barbados and English Bankruptcy law, no objections to Merchant Shipping Act);
  • Treasury (copyright returns [2 letters], leave to Reverend Canon Clinckett, Canon Clinckett's allowance [2 letters];
  • Foreign Office (repatriation of a servant of the late King JaJa [2 letters], reported discontent of labourers recruited for Congo railway [4 letters], possible visit of the empress of Austria);
  • War Office (appointment of Colonel G Paton to command the troops, no objection to Military Duty Allowance Amendment Act, War Department land and buildings);
  • Barbados Water Supply Company Limited (position of the company);
  • General Post Office (new postal tariff; suspension of parcel post);
  • Board of Customs (no comment on Trade Act 1891);
  • Registry of Friendly Societies (comments on Friendly Societies Act 1891);
  • Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (comments on report on the sugar cane borer, states that it is too late in the year to send sisal hemp plants from Kew but that they may be obtained from various colonies including Jamaica);
  • Netherlands Embassy (requests reconsideration of the case of the Dutch brig Acadie);
  • The Montserrat Company Limited (enquiry re military expenditure);
  • The Barbados Railway Company Limited (proposed subsidy);
  • Local Government Board (in reply to enquiry state that they are not aware of any cases of cholera in England or Wales);
  • West India & Pacific Steam Ship Company Limited (protest about quarantine imposed on ships proceeding from Liverpool to Barbados).

  • John Thomas Bispham (complains of ill-treatment at Colon);
  • George G Chisholm (withdraws allegations against Mr W S Graves);
  • H A Clay (application for post of assistant master at British Guiana);
  • Reverend Canon G M Clinckett (his salary);
  • Mrs Letetia Gaskin (seeks position for her husband);
  • Sir J S Hay (reports his arrival in UK on leave; proposes to leave UK on 20 July; extension of leave);
  • Dr Alfred Plummer (supports Mr H H Hancock's application for post of second master at Queen's College Trinidad);
  • Jack Richards (applies for re-employment on Government railway);
  • Whimster & Watson (requests information about refusal of authorities in the West Indies to allow goods from Europe to be landed)
