Description

Despatches from Rawson William Rawson, governor of Barbados (September to December 1871) together with correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and from individuals on matters relating to Barbados. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from offices and individuals is not and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • House of Commons (enquires as to how many members of the Church are there out of the 152,000 inhabitants of Barbados);
  • Admiralty (copies of the route to be taken by a detached squadron under orders of Rear-Admiral Beauchamps Seymour, movements of ships, cost of engraving the maps of Barbados on a reduced scale);
  • Crown Agents (stationery for the governor in chief's Office);
  • Council Office (Act making provision for the apprehension of deserters from foreign vessels);
  • Board of Trade (distressed seamen, amendment of the Act regulating the trade of Barbados, erection of a lighthouse on the east coast of Barbados, meteorology);
  • Treasury (stationery for the governor in chief's Office, appointment of Senior Judge of the Assistant Court of Appeal, report of the Board of Customs relative to the Act regulating the trade of Barbados);
  • Foreign Office (natives of Barbados imprisoned by the authorities of Surinam, application of the United States Consul at Barbados for permission to act as Swiss Consular Agent in the same Colony);
  • Immigration Board (Barbadian labourers emigrated to Dutch Guiana);
  • Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (condition and capability of Codrington College);
  • General Post Office (statement of balances due on accounts of the several Postmasters of the Windward Islands, reimbursement from the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company)
