Description

Letters received from various government offices (departments), other organisations and individuals relating to Barbados. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (payment of contribution towards lock hospital, rules for lock hospital, survey of Barbados not yet completed, suggested establishment of a system of meteorological observations);
  • Crown Agents (Admiralty contribution to lock hospital, design for Barbados flag [not in item; sent to Admiralty], expenses of lock hospital and treadmill [or treadwheel] for prison);
  • Board of Trade (no objection to provisions of Act to consolidate the Acts for regulating trade, proposed lighthouse, loss of the merchant ship Haidee, apprehension of deserters from United States whaling vessels);
  • Treasury (Act granting rights to the International Ocean Telegraph Company, revised telegraph legislation following transfer of former company's rights to the West India and Panama Telegraph Company, Act to consolidate the Acts for regulating trade, enquiry as to the date and cause of the removal of the Reverend C L Petersen from the number of clergy receiving stipends, Act to encourage and promote the establishment of communication by means of electric telegraphs);
  • Foreign Office (appointment of Mr David Campbell Da Costa as Venezuelan consul);
  • War Office (enquiry regarding the necessity for the colonel commanding the troops at Barbados to make annual visits throughout the Windward and Leeward Islands, statistical return of militia, volunteers and military police, request for copies of the official records of the 'Abyssinian Expedition' to be send to Barbados, Gibraltar, Nova Scotia and Malta, suggested introduction of a system of meteorological observation, celebration of Queen Victoria's birthday);
  • General Post Office (route of West India mail packet, amended rules for transaction of money order business between the imperial and colonial post offices, transport of mail by a French packet);
  • West India and Panama Telegraph Company (legislation to encourage and promote the establishment of communication by means of the electric telegraph [with manuscript copy of Act No 24 of 1869]);
  • Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (acknowledging receipt of correspondence relating to Codrington College);

  • Mr E P Henslowe, vicar of Huish Episcopi (seeking information about Private James Lock, 2nd battalion, 16th Regiment of Foot);
  • Mr C F Lyall (application for post of provost marshal);
  • Mr Joseph S Mayers (application for extension of leave, application for payment of stipend);
  • Mr E St John Parry (reports death of Bishop Parry);
  • Mr R Rawles, former principal of Codrington College (report on the management of the college with printed proposal for the conversion of the college into a grammar school and statutes of the college);
