Description

Letters received from various government offices (departments), other organisations and individuals relating to Barbados. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (implementation of Contagious Diseases Act and contribution towards cost of Lock Hospital [several letters], soundings in Carlisle Bay, Act to prevent spirituous or fermented liquors being brought on board Royal Navy ships, erection of additional light on the salient point of the East Coast);
  • Crown Agents (cost of treadwheel);
  • Medical Department of Privy Council (recommends Florence Nightingale's notes on hospitals and nursing for guidance in the construction and management of hospitals);
  • Foreign Office (reports that steps taken at Stockholm to trace 'the Seaman Nelson' have been unsuccessful, appointment of Mr Robert Holley as United States consul at Barbados [several letters], the consul for the Confederation Mr Clairmonte has been granted six months leave and Mr R W O'Neale is acting in his place, Mr D C Da Costa has been appointed Venezuelan consul);
  • Home Office (prison rules and treadwheel);
  • Land and Emigration Board (land regulations in the Windward Islands);
  • Institute of Civil Engineers (appointment of chief engineer);
  • General Post Office (statement of the balances on revenue and money order accounts);
  • Office of Commissioners in Lunacy (suggestions and instructions issued by the Commissioners of Architects engaged in the construction of lunatic asylums);
  • University of London (extension of benefits of the Gilchrist Educational Fund to the Windward and Leeward Islands);
  • Board of Trade (acknowledgment of correspondence concerning a return of vessels at Bridgetown and the commercial code of signals, possible imperial contribution towards the cost of a lighthouse);
  • Treasury (proposal for placing the Windward and Leeward Islands under a chief governor, application for superannuation allowance from Mr Fraser former comptroller of customs);
  • War Office (plans of a lock hospital being constructed at Kildare and lists of furniture and medicine [not in item; sent to Barbados], repayment of cost of items supplied to two military convicts, purchase of commission by Mr G M Outtram, transfer of site of the old Naval Hospital to the colonial authorities, discontinuance of custom of firing guns either in the morning and evening or at noon given refusal of colonial authorities to bear cost)
