Description

Correspondence from the bishop of Barbados, William Hart Coleridge, to the secretary of state mainly concerning ecclesiastical matters such as his visits to the various parts of his diocese, his resignation and pension, and the appointment, conduct and resignation of members of the clergy. [This volume concludes the sequence of correspondence from the bishop of Barbados and the Leeward Islands; the diocese was subsequently divided into three: Barbados, Antigua and Guiana.] Correspondence also includes:

  • Letters relating to the transfer of a school-house in Mahaica, Demerara, from the Church Missionary Socieity to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Lands
  • Printed copy of an 'Ecclesiastical Return' listing places of worship, schools and school attendance in Tobago, Trinidad, Grenada, and St Vincent
  • Extract from The Official Gazette and General Advertiser of 21 March 1840 being a 'Statement of Churches, Chapels and School-houses in the Island of Barbados, before the year 1825, or re-erected since, in the place of buildings of the same kind, which were destroyed in the Storm of 1831'; with related correspondence
  • Extract from The Barbadian of 6 May 1840 reporting the laying of the corner stone of the Public Hospital; with text of inscription and of the bishop's address
  • Printed copy of 'A Letter addressed to the Clergy of the English Branch of the Church Catholic in the Island of Trinidad by the Right Reverend William Hart, Bishop of Barbados and the Leeward Islands, 1840'
  • Printed list of clergy ordained within the diocese 1825-1840
  • Report by Robert Horsfold, solicitor general, on an Antigua act of 1840 'to assist in providing a sufficient stipend for the Minister of All Saints Chapel'
  • List of friendly societies in Barbados with their membership numbers
  • Cutting from The Barbadian of 7 April 1840: 'Ecclesiastical Intelligence' reporting confirmation services etc. in various islands
  • Printed copy of tables giving details of parishes in the Archdeaconries of British Guiana and of Barbados
  • Bishop's comments on a statement by Governor Light [British Guiana] that 'the illegitimacy of the coloured race has been an obstacle to receiving Episcopalian orders at Codrington College at Barbados'
