Description

Correspondence from the bishop of Barbados, William Hart Coleridge, to the secretary of state mainly concerning ecclesiastical matters such as his visits to the various parts of his diocese and to England, the extent of the diocese, the construction of churches at St Lucia, Barbados, St Vincent, and Anguilla (including re-erection of those destroyed by hurricane) and the appointment, conduct and resignation of members of the clergy. Correspondence also includes:

  • Extract from The Barbadian [date not given] giving reports of the St Kitts and Antigua Branch Associations of the Incorporated Society for the Conversion and Religious Instruction and Education of the Negro Slaves in the British West India Islands for 1832
  • Articles of the Saint John's Town Friendly Society, established 15 May 1828, as amended in 1829 and 1833
  • Extract from The Barbadian of 18 May 1833 giving report of the Barbados Branch Association of the Incorporated Society for the Conversion and Religious Instruction and Education of the Negro Slaves in the British West India Islands
  • Purchase of a parsonage house for the rector of St George and St Andrew, St Vincent
  • Papers relating to the bishop's controversy with Governor Sir Lionel Smith on the distribution of the parliamentary grant to hurricane sufferers, including two printed copies of his letter to the governor dated 11 August 1831
  • Printed copy of the 'Third Report of the Association for Aiding the Education of Poor Children of Colour in the Parish of Christ Church'
  • Report of appointment of Mr and Mrs Davis as schoolmaster and schoolmistress of the school for 'liberated Africans' at Kingston in Tortola with related correspondence
  • Report of the establishment of a protestant burial ground at Caracas, Venezuela
  • Extract from a report of the Antigua Branch Association of the Incorporated Society for the Conversion and Religious Instruction and Education of the Negro Slaves in the British West India Islands
  • Extract from a letter describing the effects of the recent hurricane on Dominica
  • Copy of letter from the bishop of Jamaica to the Church Missionary Society on the subject of religious instruction
  • Printed copy of 'Tabular Statements' relating to the state of the diocese of Barbados and the Leeward Islands, with map showing the extent of the diocese
  • Papers concerning the state of the Church of England in Berbice
  • Printed copy of 'A Primary Charge addressed to the Clergy of the Diocese of Barbados and the Leeward Islands and delivered in the Islands of Barbados, Antigua and St Christopher in [1833 and 1834] by the Right Reverend William Hart Coleridge, D.D.
