Description

Correspondence from the bishop of Barbados, William Hart Coleridge, to the secretary of state mainly concerning ecclesiastical matters such as his visits, and those of archdeacons, to the various parts of his diocese, the building of new places of worship in Nevis and Anguilla, and the appointment, conduct and resignations of members of the clergy. Correspondence also includes:

  • Extract from The Weekly Register, Antigua, reporting the bishop's visit
  • Papers relating to repairs to the school house of the Society for the Education of the Poor at St Vincent, including printed copy of the tenth annual report of the society
  • Extracts from a report by the archdeacon of his official visitation to the archdeaconry
  • Brief report of the state of the house in the Botanical Gardens in St Vincent
  • Reports of hurricane: destruction of bishop's house, churches and chapels, loss of life particularly amongst the slave population. Refers to ecclesiastical returns of the loss sustained by the hurricane [not in item; sent to Treasury], and urges the necessity of immediate financial assistance
  • Printed report of the Antigua Branch Association of the Incorporated Society for the Conversion and Religious Instruction and Education of the Negro Slaves in the British West India Islands, for the year 1831
  • Papers relating to the possible replacement of the Reverend Mr Beaver, officiating minister in St Lucia, including testimonials in his favour
  • Bishop's response to a letter requesting him to abstain as much as possible from making applications to the naval commanders for transport
