Description

Correspondence from the bishop of Barbados, William Hart Coleridge, to the secretary of state mainly concerning ecclesiastical matters such as his visits to the various parts of his diocese, his official residence, the building and renovation of places of worship in Barbados, Demerara, Bequia (St Vincent), and Antigua and the appointment, conduct and resignation of members of the clergy. Correspondence also includes:

  • Newspaper cutting reporting the consecration of St Mark's Chapel, St John, Barbados
  • Extract from The Barbadian of 19 March 1830 reporting the consecration of St Matthew's Chapel, St Michael, Barbados
  • Extract from The Barbadian of 2 April 1830, being the 'Eleventh Annual Report of the Barbados Society for the Education of the Poor in the Principles of the Established Church', and a printed copy of the same report
  • Printed copy of the 'First Annual Report of the English-Harbour Society for Aiding the Education of Poor Children'
  • Extract from The Barbadian being the 1829 'Report of the Antigua Branch Association of the Incorporated Society for the Conversion and Religious Instruction and Education of the Negro Slaves in the British West India Islands'
  • Cutting from The Barbadian of 27 April 1930 reporting the ceremony of laying the corner stone of St Paul's Chapel
  • Cuttings from The Barbadian of 4 May 1830 being the 'Report for the Year 1829 of the Antigua District Committee of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge' and the report of the St Christopher Charitable Institution for the Support and Education of destitute white Children.

  • Extract from The Barbadian of 8 October 1830 being the Fifth Annual Report of the Ladies Association for the Relief of the Indigent Sick and Inform of Bridge Town and its Environs
  • Copy of 'Papers relative to Codrington College, Barbados' printed in 1828 by R. Gilbert, St John's Square, London. Includes extracts from the annual reports, 1709 to 1826, of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts relating to the college, including ground plans and elevations and views of the front and rear of the building.
  • A letter from the bishop forwarding copy of a recent sermon by William Marshall Harte (see CO 28/147 and 148). Sermon not in volume; forwarded to James Stephen with the note 'you will find this sermon worth looking at'.
