Description

Correspondence from the bishop of Barbados, William Hart Coleridge, to the secretary of state mainly concerning ecclesiastical matters such as his arrival in Barbados on 28 January 1825, his visits within the diocese and his residence [called 'Gibraltar'], and the appointment, conduct, leave of absence, and resignation of members of the clergy, and their travel arrangements. Also includes:

  • Correspondence concerning the creation of archdeaconries
  • Lists of clergymen
  • Questions concerning the powers granted by the bishop's patent
  • Requests for a ship to be placed at his disposal for visiting other parts of his diocese
  • Printed copy of a drawing of Codrington College from the Chapel Hill, 1825
  • Copy of the following Barbados statutes of 1825 as published in The Barbadian of 13 September 1825: 'Act for appropriating a Sum of Money to the Use of James McQueen, Esquire, Author of the Pamphlet entitled"The West India Colonies, the Calumnies and Misrepresentations circulatd against them by the Edinburgh Review, Mr Clerkson, Mr Cropper, etc. etc. examined and refuted'; 'Act for building an additional Place of Public Worship in Bridge-Town in the Parish of Saint Michael'; 'Act to compel masters of Vessels to clear out their Vessels at the several Colonial Offices of this Island before departing hence'
  • Copy of a proclamation confirming Monday 10 October 1825 as a 'solemn and religious Fast' to commemorate the hurricane of that date in 1780
  • Printed pamphlet 'The Christian Remembrancer; or, the Churchman's Biblical, Ecclesiastical, and Literary Miscellany', dated February 1826, including brief note of a meeting of the Antigua district committee of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, and addresses to the bishop of Barbados
  • Printed statement of 'the present Ecclesiastical Establishment in the Diocese of Barbados and the Leeward Islands, with the Number of Chapels, &c, more immediately required' with related correspondence
  • Petition of the vestry of St Philip's Parish in Antigua asking for aid from the British government towards the erection of a new parish church
  • Petition of the vestry of the Parish of Saint Paul, Capisterre, Saint Christopher, concerning improvements to the parish church
  • Extracts from The Barbadian concerning the 'Branch Association of the Island of Barbados, in aid of the incorporated society for the Conversion and Religious Instruction and Education of the Negro Slaves' including a copy of its first annual report
  • Printed pamphlet, 'Report of the Barbados Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge', 1826
  • Copy of English 'Act to make Provision for the Salaries of certain Bishops, and other Ecclesiastical Dignitaries and Ministers, in the Diocese of Jamaica, and in the Diocese of Barbados and the Leeward Islands; and to enable His Majesty to grant Annuities to such Bishops upon the Resignation of their Offices', 6 Geo IV [1825], cap LXXXVIII
  • Copy of English 'Act to amend an Act of the last Session of Parliament, for making Provision for the Salaries of certain Bishops, and other Ecclesiastical Dignitaries and Ministers, in the Diocese of Jamaica, and in the Diocese of Barbados and the Leeward Islands; and to enable His Majesty of grant Annuities to such Bishops upon the Resignation of their Offices', 7 Geo IV [1826], cap IV
  • Printed copies of various communications from the bishop as presented to Parliament, including returns from nine of the eleven parishes of Barbados concerning the extent and frequency of the religious instruction provided to slaves, and other correspondence on the subject
