Description

Despatches from Sir Charles Edward Grey, governor of Barbados, written between August and December 1842, together with correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and from individuals sent during the year. Despatches are described at item level; other correspondence is not and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (reply to Mr Mayer's objections to the present Royal Mail Steam Packet arrangements);
  • Agent (complains of alternation in the course of the steamers, acknowledges letter in reply to his complaint, asks whether the amended Franchise Bill has been confirmed, forwards memorial from Mr Mayers for compensation for the loss of his office as protector of slaves);
  • Privy Council Office (Act No 758 affecting the appellate jurisdiction of the Crown ought not to be allowed, [the index refers to a further 11 letters approving or disallowing numbered Acts which are noted as 'sent away in original' and which appear to have been forwarded to the governor]);
  • Board of Trade (no objection to Act 765 relating to import duty, decision on Act 765 to be deferred);
  • Foreign Office (presentation of Sir Reynold Alleyne at the Saxon Court, asks whether there is any objection to the grant of the Royal Exequatur to Mr Hayes appointed United States consul at Barbados);
  • Home Office (observations of inspector of prisons on annual prisons report, Mr Bethune is too busy to revise the penal law, report on certain Acts);
  • Law Officers (sentence against brigantine confirmed by Privy Council, report on Acts 765 and 698);
  • Treasury (payment of Sir Charles Grey's passage money, cannot grant further remuneration to Captain Hamilton in respect of his mission to Texas [two letters], bishop's pension sanctioned, further on bishop's pension, no objection to Act No 735 concerning steam packets, Bishop Coleridge relieved from payment of expenses of passing letters patent for his pension, reply to enquiry about colonial import duties on British goods, passage allowance to Mr Bedingfield sanctioned, reply to enquiry as to what portion of the surplus slave compensation fund could be given towards the hospital lunatic asylum and lazaretto in Barbados);
  • War Office (Lieutenant Connor cannot be allowed his military half pay so long as he holds the appointment of inspector general of police at Barbados);
  • Admiralty Registry Office (forwards patent appointing Sir Richard Bowcher Clarke judge of the Vice Admiralty Court);
  • Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (enquiry about the divisions of the proposed new diocese of Jamaica).

  • Reverend C Lawson (expresses his thanks for appointment as archdeacon of Barbados and requests passage allowance for himself and family);
  • James Murphy (petition for repayment of fine incurred under quarantine law);
  • J Ordesson (seeks appointment);
  • Mr Phipps (immigration, migration of African labourers, seeks employment);
  • B Walsh (enquiry about certain property);
  • G White (requests three months leave, asks for repayment of fees paid for his warrant of appointment as secretary at Barbados);
  • B Walrond (requests six months' extension of his leave, forwards medical certificate in support of his request for extension of leave);
  • George Whitla (complains of the unequal pressure of taxes on the trading and mercantile classes);
  • B T Young (addresses to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert).
