Description

Despatches: proceedings before the Court of Appeal. This volume contains reports of appeals heard before the Assistant Court of Appeal together with abstracts of cases heard and decided by local magistrates. The 'abstracts' are entered on printed forms giving:

  • names of parishes;
  • names of justices;
  • number of individual cases [male or female];
  • number of individuals punished [male or female];
  • general character of offences;
  • general character of punishments awarded;

  • remarks [giving brief details of each appeal].
Accompanying quarterly reports of proceedings heard and determined by the judges of the Assistant Court of Appeal describe each appeal, giving the names of the appellant and respondent, the names of the judges hearing the appeal, copies of depositions [often verbatim] taken by local magistrates, accounts of the examination of both parties and of any witnesses, and the decision of the court.

Papers were transmitted to the Colonial Office by Governor E M J McGregor but he gives no additional information or comments.
