Description

Despatches from Lionel Smith, governor of Barbados, dated August to December 1835, together with correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters relating to Barbados sent during 1835. Despatches are described at item level, correspondence from offices and individuals is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (requisition for movement of troops, vacant office of marshal of Vice Admiralty Court, erection of lighthouse, mail service, payment of governor's expenses in visiting the islands);
  • Agent, J P Mayers (memorial from members of Council concerning police magistrates, possible insertion in the Gazette of Order in Council approving the auxiliary Act, recommends Mr Walrond for office of provost marshal);
  • Commander in Chief (additions to 1st West India Regiment);
  • Board of Trade (complaint of Messrs Cavan & Company about tonnage duty, lighthouse);
  • Home Office (states that no person named McAlpin has been transported from Barbados to Bermuda [missing], enquiry about B Walrond's statement that he was pardoned four years ago, Mr Mallalieu's re-appointment as inspector of the Metropolitan Police);
  • Law Officers (their opinion that there is no valid objection to the conviction of Christmas);
  • Treasury (proposed arrangement for repaying official postage of governor, requests that governor be asked to explain delay in distribution of the residue of the hurricane grant, recommends confirmation of Acts relating to payment of salaries and expenses of the Customs Department and for the temporary suspension of a portion of the tonnage duties, payment for arms and accoutrements for the militia, Messrs Cavan & Company's complaint against tonnage duty, forwards opinion of law officers on the case of the escheated property of the late Benjamin Agard, repair of the bishop's house, grant of pecuniary aid on behalf of the seven churches destroyed, Mr Best's application for a loan of £20,000 for relief of estates damaged by 1831 hurricane, expense of postage incurred in correspondence with the lieutenant governors, cannot incur any expense in the repair of the bishop's house, bill for £500 drawn by Archdeacon Elliot, governor's application for additional clerical assistance, erection of lighthouse, list of clergy and catechists);
  • Lloyd's (recommends erection of lighthouse, plans for erection of lighthouse);
  • Customs House, Falmouth (receipt for a box to be forwarded to Lord Glenelg)

  • Atkins & Sons (asks date of Captain Hough's arrival in the colony as a stipendiary magistrate);
  • Reverend Mr Austen (seeks appointment);
  • Anonymous (memorandum on operation of the emancipation act as it affects mortgagees);
  • J Bramkin (apprenticed labourer named Prince supposed to be on board the Arethusa);
  • John J Briggs (complains that several of the Government offices are impeding the proper working of the Slavery Abolition Law);
  • William A Bishop (refers to his application for employment);
  • Colonel Bush (application for post of lieutenant governor);
  • J H Byar (compensation claim, sale of his property to meet a debt, complains of circumstances under which he and his wife are kept in jail, memorial of grievances);
  • J Blackhurst (claim to compensation money);
  • J Bezant (application for appointment in England, complains of having been removed from his district);
  • Lord Combermere (encloses memorial relating to 4½% duties);
  • J B Colthurst, stipendiary magistrate (states that he will embark the following day);
  • Lieutenant Colonel Disbrowe (leave of absence [missing], hopes not to be deprived of his office without his views being heard [missing]);
  • Archdeacon Elliot (hopes for preferment in England on his retirement, his leave of absence, half salary on leave);
  • W E Gladstone (letter from the bishop concerning his residence);
  • Reverend Mr J Gisborne (letter respecting the religious books sent out for the education of the apprenticed labourers);
  • Jane Harrison, 'a native of the West Indies' (requests a free passage to Barbados for herself and her child);
  • Phoebe Inglis (complains of ill treatment from a Mr Adams);
  • George Kennedy, stipendiary magistrate (states that he will embark the following day);
  • J D Maycock, member of Council (application for extension of leave);
  • Frederic Mathews (asks if salary of the stipendiary magistrates has been increased);
  • Harrison Padmore (his claim for compensation for his slaves);
  • Mr Parkinson (applies for post of sub collector made vacant by death of Mr Gibons);
  • W H Prescod (his compensation money);
  • H F Senhouse (applies for post of stipendiary magistrate for his brother Lieutenant E H Senhouse);
  • Sir H Taylor (memorial from J H Byars)
