Description

Despatches from Sir Henry Warde, governor of Barbados, together with correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and from individuals on matters relating to Barbados. Despatches are described at item level; letters from offices and individuals are not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (refers to previous correspondence concerning payment of certain fees for conducting prosecutions in Barbados);
  • Agents (copy of address from planters and merchants concerning the distressed state of Barbados - 'Starvation and Famine are staring the Inhabitants in the Face', forwards various papers as requested by House of Assembly [not in item], states that agent does not hold any funds of the island);
  • Privy Council Office (forwards Order in Council disallowing Act No 405 concerning the 'Vestry of the Hebrew Nation resident in Barbados', appointment of John Barrow to the Council of Barbados, appointment of Phillip Lytcott Hindes to the Council, appointment of John Alleyne Holder to the Council);
  • Board of Trade (states that certain numbered Acts can be left to their operation but that others are still pending consideration);
  • Home Office (forwards conditional pardon for Thomas Murdock [not in item], forwards conditional pardon for Samuel Frere Jones [not in item], expenses of bringing the prisoner S F Jones to England with copy of a letter from the town clerk at Falmouth concerning accommodation for Jones until he can be transferred to Portsmouth, expenses of transportation of prisoners to be covered by the colonial governments);
  • Law Officers (state their opinion that the Barbados Militia Law is still in force);
  • Treasury (salary and stationery allowance for governor's private secretary, claim made by procurator general for costs of conducting several prosecutions in the Vice Admiralty Court [with copies of relevant correspondence];
  • Navy Office (passages for Edward Kearns and family, requests instructions concerning a seaman sentenced to transportation recently arrived on the transport Success at Spithead);
  • Board of Ordnance (state of colonial defences);
  • War Office (application of Lieutenant R F Walton to receive half pay).

  • Isabella Buckoll (seeks appointment for Edward Henry Moore);
  • B Charlton (requests a passport for his son Samuel Charlton);
  • William Eversley (memorial concerning costs due in respect of certain prosecutions [with subsequent correspondence);
  • D Thornhill (salary application on behalf of collector of duties).
