Description

Despatches from Lord Combermere, governor of Barbados, together with correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and from individuals on matters relating to Barbados. Despatches are described at item level; other correspondence is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (reports that HMS Raleigh will leave Portsmouth for Barbados and Jamaica on 28 December);
  • Agent (copies of a memorial from merchants and planters concerning Customs House fees which has been delivered to the Treasury);
  • Privy Council Office (no objection to Acts Nos 344-348, no objection to Acts Nos 349-354, no objection to Acts 355-366, approves appointment of Nathan Lucas, Richard Cobham and J R Best as members of Council);
  • Law Officers (their opinion on legislation for preventing the practice of Obeah, their opinion in the case of 'a Negro which has been found concealed in the hold of the London Transport recently arrived from Barbadoes' that the man 'cannot be legally compelled to return to the colony from which he appears to have made his escape, but that if he desires it he should be set at large');
  • Navy Office (reports the finding of a man concealed on the London Transport who states that his name is Samuel Williams and that he is a free man born of free parents, passage on board the Cambridge for Thomas Robney formerly a private in the 4th West India Regiment);
  • Treasury (agrees that Barbara Kirton and Sarah Kirton should be granted their manumissions, payment of salary of governor's private secretary [two items]).

  • N & G Collyer (payment of the governor's salary [two items];
  • Captain Cumberland and Mr Distrowe (request a meeting [with copy of a letter to Major George Distrowe concerning formal confirmation of his appointment]);
  • Mr Distrowe (concerning his brother Major George Distrowe);
  • Samuel Lord (requests a meeting);
  • Robert Raddon (further on the property of Samuel Barnes).
