Description

Despatches from President Spooner, President Alleyne and Governor Lord Combermere, successive administrators of Barbados, together with letters from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and from individuals on matters relating to Barbados. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from offices and individuals is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Commander in Chief (petition of Joseph Dottin 'a man of colour' formerly of the 3rd Royal Veterans Battalion requesting a passage to Barbados, passage for Mrs Dottin, case of a trumpeter named Loveless Overton considered to have been treated unfairly on his return from many years in England and subsequent to his intervention when he witnessed an enslaved person being beaten [with Overton's statement]);
  • Privy Council Office (Lord Combermere's commission, petition requesting that Barbados be made a free port, appointment of Sir Reynold Alleyne as a member of Council);
  • Treasury (directions have been given for the delivery of packages belonging to the family of the late Sir James Leith, letter from Peter Tourquand stating that the colonial government at Demerara has not depreciated the value of the dollar as previously reported, payment of President Spooner's salary, release of Edward Wish from prison, payment of Lord Combermere's salary, approval of provision of a passage for Joseph Dottin on the Prince of Orange shortly to leave from Deptford).

  • William Bentinck (provides information requested);
  • Lord Combermere (arrangements for his proxy vote in the House of Lords);
  • Thomas Carter (provides a return of the office of provost marshal as requested and apologises for the delay);
  • N & G Collyer (Lord Combermere's salary [three items]);
  • George Canning (forwards revised memorial from William Coupland and William Kermode owners respectively of the ships Margaret Ann and Robert Quayle which had been pressed into the service of the Barbados government during the 'insurrection');
  • Samuel Edwards (provides additional information in connection with his application for the post of attorney general);
  • Joshua Greene (seeks employment as judge of the Vice Admiralty Court at Barbados or elsewhere);
  • William Kermode (further on his claim respecting government use of the Robert Quayle);
  • Thomas Moody (concerning expenses in dealing with the affairs of the late Sir James Leith);
  • George Maynards and others (certifies that President Spooner has departed for England and that Lord Combermere has assumed the government);
  • Lord St Helens (requests seat in the Council of Barbados for Sir Reynolds [Reynold?] Alleyne);
  • John Spooner (states that his father is 'so much an invalid' that he is unable to attend a meeting as requested and that he does not remember why the Robert Quayle was requisitioned by the Barbados government and any papers will be in Barbados);
  • Morgan Thomas, surgeon, Royal Artillery (his claim for travelling expenses when instructed to deliver official despatches relating to the insurrection);
  • Percy Wyndham (concerning papers of the Registrar's office).
