Description

Despatches from President Spooner (items 1-2, 10) and from Sir James Leith (items 3-9), Governor of Barbados, together with correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and from individuals on matters concerning Barbados.

Despatches are described at item level; other correspondence is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • Privy Council Office (claim for head money in respect of 152 Africans captured in the vessel La Louisa [2 items], approval of commission and instructions for Sir James Leith);
  • S W H Burn [?] & Company (requests information about an Act levying import duty on wine);
  • Treasury (asks if expenses relating to the purchase of a government vessel at Barbados are approved, asks if expenses submitted by President Spooner are approved [2 items], exemption of wines from duty);
  • Sir George Beckwith (forwards list of members of the Council of Barbados);
  • Navy Office (query regarding accounts of Mr Smith former naval storekeeper at Barbados);
  • Captain J Belshes [?] (acknowledges receipt of Sir James Leith's commission and states that he will leave London for Portsmouth the following day);
  • G W Jordan, Colonial Agent for Barbados (supply of lumber and provisions);
  • John Cook, Bridgetown (his petition to the Prince Regent concerning accusations against him with enclosures).
