Description

Despatches from George Beckwith, Governor of Barbados (items 1-23), and from John Spooner, President of the Council (items 24-27), together with correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and from individuals on matters relating to Barbados. Despatches are described at item level; other correspondence is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • J R Chapman (asks if arms held at Barbados may be released for use elsewhere);
  • War Office (states that Colonel Douglas of the 55th Regiment has not reported his arrival in the UK and that on his appointment as adjutant general to the forces in the West Indies he was instructed to proceed to Barbados);
  • G Halam, Collector of Customs (forwards return of 'natives of Africa' enlisted or apprenticed at Barbados during 1813);
  • Francis Hayward (complains of his treatment following accusations against him of libel [3 items]);
  • Board of Ordnance (agrees issue of 2000 muskets from the stores at Barbados; no objection to the export of gunpowder to Barbados );
  • Jacob Belgrave and 18 other 'persons of colour' (address to Governor Beckwith on the occasion of his departure from Barbados);
  • Treasury (asks if bills submitted by Governor Beckwith should be paid [4 items]; reports shipment of 3860 blankets to Barbados on board the Lord Eldon; requests approval of request for further supply of blankets);
  • Admiralty (forwards copy of correspondence between Rear Admiral Durham and Governor Beckwith on the subject of prisoners of war confined in the Town Jail at Barbados; refers to the crew of the Lovely Ann, captured by the US ship Constitution, and states that they cannot be considered as prisoners of war as the British Government has refused to commence the system of exhanging prisoners with the USA [see also CO/28/83/6]; forwards correspondence concerning the delay in conveying the 90th Regiment from Barbados to Canada);
  • Colonial Office (draft of a commission under the Act 46 Geo III cap 54 for the trial of offences committed at sea).
