Description

Despatches from George Beckwith together with letters from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and from individuals on matters relating to Barbados. Despatches are described at item level; other correspondence is not and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • Treasury (arrears of salary claimed by President Spooner, Mr Hallam's correspondence concerning the disposal of Africans under the Abolition Act, Governor Beckwith's claim for the salary of his private secretary and for stationery [4 items], increase of Customs fees at Demerara, sum of money claimed by Governor Beckwith to be in the hands of the collector and comptroller of customs at St Eustatius, claim of Governor Beckwith for additional sum, payment of duty for the use of Greenwich Hospital, collection of the customs revenue, transfer of St Anne's Castle to Ordnance Department);
  • G W Jordan, agent for Barbados (petition from Barbados residents concerned with sugar processing and trade);
  • Privy Council Office (appointment of Dr Compton to the Council of Barbados);
  • Board of Trade (fortification works and grant of Crown land);
  • Major General Charles Shipley (application for a governorship [2 items]);
  • Board of Ordnance (transfer of St Anne's Castle to Ordnance Department);
  • General Post Office (recovery of a debt due from Mr Moore former deputy postmaster general at Barbados);
  • Colonial Office (letters to J Beckett concerning passage of the Baron Frederick de Bretton [or Britton] to Barbados [4 items; it is alleged that the Baron deserted from the British military following a duel at Barbados in which his opponent died]);
  • Baron de Bretton (describes his poor state of health in prison and seeks financial assistance);
  • George Hallam, Collector of Customs (disposal of liberated Africans by the collector at St Vincent, annual return of Africans enlisted or apprenticed)
