Description

Despatches from John Spooner, acting Governor of Barbados, together with correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and from individuals. Despatches are described at item level; other correspondence is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • Hugh Elliot, governor of the Leeward Islands (recommends Matthew Coulthurst for the post of solicitor general at Barbados);
  • Matthew Coulhurst (seeks confirmation of his temporary appointment as solicitor general);
  • William Idle (comments on reduced supply of flour for the troops at Barbados and suggests method of beating embargo [with copies of proclamations by President Spooner and Admiral Cochrane]);
  • Treasury (requests approval of bills drawn by Spooner [3 items]);
  • Mr Jordan (exchange rates at Barbados);
  • Admiralty (forwards letter from Admiral Cochrane concerning Henry Edwards who deserted from HMS Northumberland and is detained at Barbados accused of debt);
  • Privy Council Office (Order in Council concerning commission and instructions for George Beckwith, governor of Barbados)
