Description

Despatches from Francis Humberstone Mackenzie, Baron Seaforth, Governor of Barbados, and his deputy John Spooner, dated June to December 1806, together with correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and from individuals sent during the year. Despatches are described at item level; other correspondence is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • Captain of HMS Beaulieu (has brought two prisoners from Barbados);
  • A Piggot, Lincolns Inn (refers to question on the law of escheats and recommends putting it to the Law Officers of the Crown);
  • Privy Council Office (in reply to question relating to vessels built by the Americans and conveyed to Martinique and Guadeloupe for fitting out as privateers against British trade states that there appears to be no way of dealing with this 'evil' unless such vessels are clearly contraband of war);
  • Colonel Charles Shipley, Barbados (states that former Secretary of State had informed him that he was to be granted a knighthood and hopes that the new Secretary of State will also give his support);
  • Treasury (asks if bills drawn by Lord Seaforth should be paid [4 items]);
  • Merchants and Inhabitants of Bridgetown (two addresses to Lord Seaforth expressing their approbation of his administration);
  • Admiralty (acknowledges receipt of information from Lord Seaforth [2 items], correspondence from Rear Admiral Cochrane and the Governor of Suriname concerning a claim for payment of 4% duty on the sale of all prizes at Barbados);
  • Lord Seaforth (refers to a letter of 10 November answers to which he will bring with him to London)
