Description

Despatches from Lord Seaforth, Governor of Barbados (items 1-28) and from John Ince, acting Governor (no 29), together with correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and from individuals. Despatches are described at item level; other correspondence is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • Governor Clephane [of Grenada] writing from Barbados (acknowledges receipt of despatch informing him of war with Batavian Republic and states that General Grinfield considers his continued presence at Barbados necessary);
  • Lord Seaforth to Francis Freeling, General Post Office (authority of Governor to issue instructions if detention of packet boat is required);
  • Treasury (payment of a bill of £1000 drawn by the Agent for Packets, expenses incurred in prosecution of pirates [2 items], salary of Lord Seaforth's secretary [2 items], Seaforth's expenses for conveying despatches to other islands);
  • Law Officers (opinion in the case of Lord Ducie);
  • Privy Council Office (Order in Council appointing Thomas Chase as a member of the Council of Barbados);
  • John Inglis (requests an introduction to the Governor of Barbados for his son).
