Description

Correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and from individuals on matters relating to the Leeward Islands. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • House of Commons (complaints of planters and others of the Leeward Islands on increased expenditure and taxation);
  • Admiralty (Dr Cowan's appointment as Acting Medical Officer at English Harbour District at Antigua, discontinuance of the services of HMS Sphinx, sleeping accommodation on board HMS Sphinx, conveyance of certain civil passengers from Antigua to Dominica on HMS Sphinx at the Governor's request, visit of HMS Sphinx to the Virgin Islands and complaint against the Health Officer of Antigua);
  • Crown Agents (printed copies of Bills proposed to be laid before the Legislature, new vessel for the Leeward Islands and expenditure on account of it, cost of a iron bridge for Dominica);
  • Privy Council Office (Act to further encourage agricultural immigration);
  • Board of Trade (gold medal of the French Government for Mr Stephen Dix for his services at the L'Amazone);
  • Treasury (grant of a pension to the Stipendiary Magistrate Mr Howard Lloyd, appointment of Mrs Farrington as Provider to the Liberated African Establishment, Messrs Dudgeon's tender for the construction of a steam vessel, case of McCleverty versus Hyde, Montserrat Act on Export Duties, bill for £804 as instalment of the Hurricane Loan Fund, payment due to the Telegraph for damage and costs incurred, Mr Padmore's application for the restoration of his pension from the Imperial Customs, request receipt of several bills on account of the Montserrat Earthquake Loan, Mr Alexander W Moir's application for arrears of pension as a Customs Officer, Act No 9 of 1872 to encourage telegraphic communication);
  • Foreign Office (the Telegraph case and proposed compromise, British subjects arrested at Puerto Rico on suspicion of murder, claims arising from the detention of the Telegraph, maltreatment of British subjects at Vigues and Culebra);
  • War Office (appointment of Sergeant Forsyth to be Sub-Inspector of Police of the Leeward Islands, claim on Mr Eldridge on account of the Piccadilly Estate);
  • Land Board (Mr Olivace's land claim, Mr William Crichton's application for the prolongation of his lease of Redonda Island).
