From 1997 Department of Transport
The Aerodromes Technical Directorate was originally part of the Civil Aviation Navigational Services Group of the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation and initially became part of Aviation Navigational Services Division of the new Ministry of Aviation when civil aviation functions were transferred to the new Ministry in 1959.
Subsequent reorganisations within the Ministry resulted in the Directorate becoming part of Aerodromes (General) Division and this structure was initially retained when these functions were transferred to the Board of Trade (later the Department of Trade and Industry) in the latter half of 1966. In 1968, however, a restructing of the civil aviation side of the Department resulted in the Directorate becoming part of a new Dirctorate-General of Safety and Operations, where it remained for the lifetime of the file series.
The Directorate was responsible for operational and technical matters connected with UK aerodromes, including liaison with the Divisional Controllers for Scotland and the Northern and Southern Divisions and with the Air Registration Board. It also had responsibilities for the Third London Airport, helicopter planning and the Civil Aviation Flying Unit, and it provided the secretariat for the committees for Concorde and supersonic air transport.
