It is believed that the post of Chief Economist of the Ministry of Aviation was set up in 1965. Its function was to provide a central service of economic analysis and advice to all parts of the department; to study any economic aspect of the department's work; to brief the minister and permanent secretary on general economic matters affecting the department at large; and to keep in touch with specialist economic organisations outside the department.
