Administrative / biographical background

This series contains reports produced by the Headquarters group managing the WN programmes both under the Ministry of Supply (MoS) and Ministry of Aviation (MoA). This includes NW reports made by Controller Production (Atomic Energy) and Controller Atomic Energy, both posts held by Lord Portal (1946-1951), and the subsequent post of CAW held by Sir Frank Morgan (1951-1956).

It also covers the organisation that followed - DGAW (Director General Atomic Weapons) - which became part of MoA after the demise of MoS in 1959. DGAW included DAWD (Directorate of Atomic Weapons Development) and DAWP&F (Directorate of Atomic Weapons Production and Factories). The latter had the Royal Ordnance Factories at Burghfield and Cardiff as sub-elements.

Reports made by both CSAR (Chief Superintendent Armament Research) and HER (High Explosives Research) prior to the Atomic Energy Authority Act 1954 are also covered.
