This series contains files of Branch GA2 of the Aerodromes (General) Division of the Ministry of Aviation and its successor, the Civil Aviation Department, in the Board of Trade.
Included are files which deal with the planning and development of aerodromes, their future use and ownership, and also Committee papers dealing with the problems of noise.
Policy and precedent files concerning the planning and development of aerodromes and airfields in the UK have been selected for permanent preservation. Some files relate to specific aerodromes.

The ER prefix was created in 1960, and one file was re-registered to the series from APB. The prefix remained in use until 1980 when it was replaced by the AP series.

Aerodromes General Division was created in the Ministry of Aviation in 1959. It was transferred to the Board of Trade in 1966 when the Ministry of Aviation was dissolved and renamed the Civil Aviation Division. It was responsible for the planning and development of aerodromes in the UK.
Branch 2 was responsible for HQ aspects of the groups III and IV aerodromes, (Scottish Highlands and Islands, Lands End and Scillies), non-state aerodromes (including licensing and financial aid), heliports (including Penzance), and charging policy in respect of aerodromes including en route navigation, landing fees, housing and parking of aircraft, and financial matters for Biggin Hill Aerodrome.
