The Research Division of the Ministry of Supply was created in 1952 from the Research and Radio Division. It was responsible for placing extramural research work with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, universities and other research establishments, and also dealt with matters arising from the work of the Chief Scientist and standing missions overseas. The Division provided a secretariat for the Research and Development Board and the Standing Committee on Capital Facilities, co-ordinated the work of the Departmental Defence Research Policy Committee and was responsible for general policy decisions.
