Description

Austria-Hungary: Prisoners, including:

Repatriation of Austro-Hungarian prisoners, including:

  • Baron Slater: request for action to be taken regarding the repatriation of Austrian civilian prisoners from Malta.
  • Confirmation by the Governor General of South Africa that all enemy subjects interned at Pietermaritzburg had been given the opportunity to be repatriated to their country of origin.
  • Mr Eugen (or Eugene) Malcher: authorisation by the Administrator of Northern Rhodesia for the transmission of a payment to him.
  • Copy of a letter from the Repatriation Committee for German and Austrian prisoners at St Clements Camp, Malta, requesting their early release from internment; reply to the Swedish Legation in London, stating that their repatriation could not take place until treaties of peace had been concluded.
  • Richard Skoday: petition on behalf of Austro-Hungarian officers interned at Sandhill Park requesting their release, and claiming that some of them were captured following the conclusion of the Armistice with Austria; comments by the War Office querying the accuracy of the date given for the conclusion of the Armistice.

Claims for compensation, including:

  • Henry A Arditti: copy of a letter, with three invoices, claiming compensation for unsold goods in Hungary.
  • John Rustom: claim for damages from the Austrian Government for his treatment by the Austrian authorities at the outbreak of the war, and for the financial losses which he experienced, with articles (German language) from the Neueste Post of 1 March 1918.
  • Harry Ross: letter giving information on the number of British subjects interned or confined in Austro-Hungary during the war.
  • Walter Boehler: claim for compensation for wrongful detention, with a transcription (in docket no.3337) provided by the General Register Office of the information on his birth certificate.

Sergeant A Stokes: proposal for Colonel John Summerhayes to travel to Innsbruck, Austria, to make enquiries about his whereabouts.

Miss A J Morgan, including:

  • Information that Miss Morgan had died intestate in Austria.
  • Mrs Helen Ellis: request for a form of power of attorney to be forwarded to Dr J de Griez in Vienna.

Franz Drexler and Mr C A Verebelyi, Hungarian subjects interned at Holdsworthy Camp, New South Wales, Australia: correspondence regarding their claims for compensation.

Stefan Zeni, interned at Douglas, Isle of Man: claim for compensation for the unused portion of his ticket from New York to Innsbruck, with copies of correspondence relating to a similar claim from John Kramaluk, interned at Knockaloe Camp, Isle of Man.

Walter H Collins: correspondence concerning his claim for a demobilisation grant, on the grounds that he served with the Russian Army.

Max Dokl, a deceased Austrian subject: arrangements for payments to his widow by the Liverpool Victoria Friendly Society on the account of his life policy.

Mrs Maria Woodford and Mrs Blanche von Hellmer, resident in Vienna, including:

  • Mrs Jourdan: letter enquiring about the welfare of her sister, Mrs Woodford.
  • Request by the Spanish Embassy in Vienna for Mrs Woodford and Mrs von Hellmer to be allowed to return to the UK.
  • Request by the Home Office for further details about Mr von Hellmer; information that he was living with his wife in Vienna and working as a sculptor.
  • Permission for Mrs Woodford and Mrs von Hellmer to travel to the UK.
  • Payment of remittances to Mrs Woodford by Mrs Jourdan.

James Ansell: request by his father, Dorsay Ansell, for the return of his son's personal effects, following his death in Carniola, Austria.

Repatriation of British civilians from Austria-Hungary, including:

  • Arrangements regarding the departure from Vienna of a transport train carrying British, French and American civilians.
  • Arrangements for the arrival of British subjects at Trieste, Northern Italy.
  • List (in docket no.2134) provided by the Central Charities Committee of British subjects repatriated from Vienna.
