Description

Austria-Hungary: Prisoners, including:

Mrs Adelaide Carter, a British subject in Budapest: arrangement for the despatch of remittances to her, including:

  • Miss Gay: notification that she was sending the final remittance to Mrs Carter from Church Army funds.
  • Miss Grace Leech: transfer of a remittance to Mrs Carter.
  • Miss E M Cram: transfer of a remittance to Mrs Carter, with letters from herself and others expressing concern about Mrs Carter's health and financial position.
  • Payment of a grant to Mrs Taylor by the Spanish Embassy, and decision not to repatriate her due to her poor state of health.

Exchange of Austrian money by British subjects repatriated from Austria, including:

  • Charles Bolus: enquiry about official arrangements for the exchange of Austrian currency.
  • Mr G Warner: memorandum about the unfavourable exchange rate in the UK for Austro-Hungarian currency.
  • Charles Cocking: enquiry into reports that the French Government were exchanging Austro-Hungarian currency at pre-war rates.
  • George Brown, Secretary of the Repatriated British Civilian Prisoners from Austria: letters explaining the financial hardships experienced by prisoners, and requesting exchange of currency to be made available at pre-war rates.
  • Major H Du Buisson, Secretary of the Repatriated British Civilians Help Committee: request for Austrian currency to be exchanged at pre-war rates; decision by the Treasury not to sanction this request.
  • Information that the French Government had not exchanged any Austrian currency from repatriated French prisoners.
  • Theodore Parry: enquiry about the recovery of a trunk from Karlstein, Austria, and about arrangements regarding the exchange of currency.
  • Mr E G Beare: letters enclosing correspondence published in The Daily Mail from Mr C J Cocking and an unnamed writer, on losses due to the rate of currency exchange.
  • Miss Sarah Nolan: enquiry about exchange rates, with a reply from the Prisoners of War Department stating the Treasury's position.

  • Edward Shires: proposal to visit the Prisoners of War Department to discuss the question of the exchange of Austrian currency.
  • Edward Kent: request for assistance in exchanging Austrian currency: information that the Prisoners of War Information Bureau were no longer authorised by the Treasury to carry out such transactions.
  • Letters from the Treasury to the National Relief Fund, enquiring whether assistance could be provided to repatriated British subjects in possession of Austrian currency; proposal by the National Relief fund to offer a favourable exchange rate.
  • Mr E G Beare: letter enclosing a newspaper extract on grants of money to senior commanders in the Armed Forces: request by the Prisoners of War Department for assistance to be provided to Mr Beare by the National Relief Fund.
  • Confirmation by the National Relief Fund that Mr Beare's case had been brought to the notice of the Central Charities Committee.
