Description

Germany: Prisoners, including:

Sapper F C Muller, the son of a German subject Friedrich Muller, interned at Knockaloe Camp: request for his return from active service in France, and transfer to a Home Defence unit.

Arrangements for the transfer of stores to Bergen, Norway, for distribution to British prisoners in Germany, and for flour to be shipped to Copenhagen, Denmark.

Establishment of a camp for British and French officers at Karlsruhe, including:

  • Claims that the camp had been established to discourage Allied air raids in the vicinity; decision not to make a formal protest.
  • Information that a number of captains and officers from the Merchant Navy were interned in the camp.
  • Despatch of food and clothing to the British prisoners in the camp.
  • Colonel Claude Lowther MP: parliamentary question about plans for British reprisals.

Proposal for a reciprocal agreement for the suspension of punishments inflicted by judicial courts on combatant prisoners, including:

  • Extension of the agreement to cover prisoners in the colonies and self-governing dominions of the British Empire.
  • Objections by the Colonial Office to the terms of the agreement.
  • British memorandum proposing a revised agreement.
  • Army Council Instruction No.1200 of 1917, German Prisoners-of-War-Remission of Punishments.

Major J C Chillingworth, interned at Feste Rosenberg Camp: letter regarding a visit to the camp by a Swiss Medical Commission.

Reciprocal agreement for the transfer of interned prisoners from one camp to another.

Representation of the interests of German and Austro-Hungarian prisoners in Australia, including:

  • Proposal for the Swiss Consul in Sydney, Mr Marc Rutty, to be granted privileges regarding the visiting of prisoners.
  • Information that Mr Rutty had resigned from his post, following his conviction for trading with the enemy.

Protest by the German authorities about the inclusion of offensive cartoons and maps in some cartons of cigarettes sent to British prisoners.

Mrs Adelaide Livngstone: correspondence regarding her attendance at a meeting in Paris to discuss allegations of the existence of secret camps in Germany.

Paul Voget, interned at Devonport Detention Barracks, New Zealand: enquiries by the German authorities about his health and possible repatriation.

Mrs Frances Archer-Shee: request for visits to be made by the Dutch authorities to certain British prisoners (names in docket no.51768) interned in Germany.

Warrant Officers James E Bellingham and Edgar A Barker, interned at Brandenburg Camp, including:

  • Statement by Mr J Smith regarding their treatment while interned at Cottbus Camp.
  • German memorandum responding to allegations raised by the British authorities.
  • Copy of a letter from Mr Bellingham and Mr Barker requesting their transfer to an officers' camp, with a list of names of various Warrant Officers (in docket no.221072) who had requested certification of their ranks.
