Description

Austria-Hungary: Prisoners, including:

Mr Edmund Fraser: enquiry about the possible repatriation of his brother, Jan Fraser Ross, confined at Kautzen in Austria.

Lists of British and Allied women interned in Austria (in docket nos.18052, 138907 and 167081).

Miss Ivy Brown, a British subject resident in Prague: enquiries by the Reverend J Ash Parsons about arrangements for sending remittances to her; confirmation that she had rejected the offer of repatriation owing to ill health.

Ignaz Klassitsch, a Hungarian subject interned at Barbados: information on his release from internment and transfer to New York, with a printed copy of Procedure with Regard to Repatriation of Enemy Persons, an enclosure to a Foreign Office circular dated 1 December 1916.

Miss Nellie Beare: enquiry about her brother, Mr Edwin George Beare, a British subject living with his wife and daughter near Pressburg; confirmation that Mr Beare was receiving relief payments, and request for his wife and daughter to be moved to Switzerland.

Mr J Richardson from SS Dardania, confined on board ship at Bocche di Cattaro, Dalmatia: permission for him to receive parcels from the Central Prisoners of War Committee.

Mr Leslie M Bown, resident at Budapest, including:

  • Request for the transmission of a message and photographs to his parents in the United Kingdom.
  • Request by his mother, Mrs Letitia Bown, for permission to send food parcels to Mr Bown.
  • Advice that money could be sent to him via the International Red Cross at Geneva.

Protest by the Austro-Hungarian Government about the internment of Austrian and Hungarian clerics in Malta and Egypt, including:

  • List of names of the clerics (in docket no.26039).
  • Instructions for those eligible for repatriation to be sent to the United Kingdom.
  • Enquiry concerning the Hungarian missionary priest Stefan Oravecz.
  • Appeal from the Vatican for an improvement in the conditions of internment for the clerics at Ras-el-Tin in Egypt.
  • Report that the clerics at Ras-el-Tin had been moved to a new camp at Sidi Bishr, and that none of them wished to be repatriated.

Mr Frederick (Tony) Deane: confirmation that he was resident in Montreal, Canada, and request for his wife to join hin in Canada.

Mr Harry Lowe: request for permission to send food parcels to his wife and family in Vienna.

Mr Arthur W Treadway, a British subject confined at Raabs, Lower Austria: arrangements for payments to him from the Canadian Pacific Railway Company.

Enquiries by the Government of India about the whereabouts and welfare of Chuni Lall, Mangal Singh and Partab (or Pertah) Singh from SS Persia, believed to be interned at Grossau; subsequent investigations revealed that the only Indians interned in Austria were Singh Gujar and Singh Nazain.

Mr H S Richards, interned at Raabs: authorisation for payments to be made to him from his bank in London.

Mrs Amelia E Geiss: enquiries about Mrs James Strain and Mrs H J Thorne, recently repatriated from Raabs.

Major Henry E Gurney, interned at Raabs: payments to him by Messrs Holt and Co. in London: proposed transfer of Major Gurney to Vienna or Budapest for health reasons, and possibility of his repatriation.

Offer by the Spanish Government to undertake the protection of Allied prisoners in Austria and Hungary in the event of the severance of diplomatic relations between the American and Austro-Hungarian Governments.

Agreement for communications regarding prisoners to be sent to the Spanish Legation at Berne, and signatures (in docket no.171364) of Spanish Embassy officials in Vienna authorised to act in matters relating to prisoners.

Lieutenant Hans Brandeis, resident on parole in the United Kingdom, including:

  • Demand by the Austro-Hungarian Government that Lieutenant Brandeis' parole should be withdrawn.
  • Proposal for the exchange of Lieutenant Brandeis for Colonel Napier, a British prisoner in Austria.
  • Enquiries by the Spanish Embassy in Vienna about the Austro-Hungarian response to the proposal.

Mr Francis Langridge: request for food parcels to be sent to Mr and Mrs H Langridge in Vienna; transmission of a power of attorney to Mrs Langridge to enable funds to be sent to her.

Miss Pauline Abeles, a British subject in Vienna: confirmation that she did not wish to be repatriated.

Request by the Austro-Hungarian Government for the transfer of Walter Denso, Lucian Sandrin and Hugo Massetz (or Hugh Masseck) from Ahmednagar Camp in India to Malta for health reasons, including:

  • Information that Lucian Sandrin did not wish to be transferred.
  • Medical report on Hugo Massetz (or Hugh Masseck), certifying that he was in good health and that there ws no medical reason for his transfer.

Alexander Burgschwaiger, interned at Oldcastle Camp, County Meath, Ireland: request by the Austro-Hungarian authorities for his repatriation.

Josef Margulies, interned at Stratford, London: request by the Austro-Hungarian Government for him to undergo a medical examination; report stating that he was in good health, and could not be released from internment.

Miss Susan Patterson, a patient at Schwartzen Sanatorium, Budapest: request by the Office of the High Commissioner for New Zealand for permission to send food parcels to her.

Alfred Montor, confined in Austria as an enemy subject: enquiries about his nationality, and decision that he could not be issued with a British passport or certificate of identity.

Mrs Elizabeth MacDonald: enquiry about her daughter, who was on board SS Persia when it was sunk by an enemy submarine off the coast of Crete, including:

  • Confirmation that the Master, the Head Steward and the Steward in Charge were among those lost on SS Persia.
  • Enquiries made to the Austro-Hungarian authorities regarding Miss MacDonald.
  • Transmission of a letter from Mrs MacDonald to Dr Lehrhammer in Vienna.

Mrs Sarah Gabriella Philps, resident at Komaron near Budapest: arrangements for the payment of remittances to her via the Spanish Embassy in Budapest, following the closure of the American Consulate.
