Description

Austria-Hungary: Prisoners, including:

Hans Bleich: decision by the Medical Referee that he was not eligible for repatriation to Austria.

Mrs Florence Sticking: request for permission to send food parcels to her husband, an uninterned British civilian resident in Vienna.

Policy on sending money and letters to British subjects abroad: printed letter isssued by the Foreign Office in 1915.

Repatriation of civilian prisoners from Egypt: issue of draft instructions to Sir Archibald Murray, the General Officer, Commanding-in-Chief, in Egypt.

Internment of naval prisoners, including:

  • Information from the American Embassy in Vienna on the detention at Graz in Austria of the captain and two gunners of SS Charterhouse.
  • Confirmation that Captain James Halloway and Chief Engineer Poole of SS Swedish Prince were interned at Salzerbad Camp, Lower Austria.
  • Captain Thomas Costello of SS Itonus, interned at Salzerbad Camp: enquiries on his behalf from the British India Steam Navigation Company Ltd.
  • Captain George Higginbotham of SS Apsley Hall: confirmation that he was interned at Salzerbad Camp.
  • Mrs Annie Halloway: enquiry about the delivery of parcels to her husband, Captain James Halloway, interned at Salzerbad Camp.
  • Letters from various merchant service officers interned at Salzerbad and Graz (names in docket no.86892).
  • Mrs M Jones: enquiry about the whereabouts of her husband, Captain Jones.
  • Captain H J Brooks, interned at Salzerbad: payments to him from his sister, Miss H Brooks and from the British India Steam Navigation Company Ltd.
  • Captain Elliott of SS Charterhouse, interned at Salzerbad: enquiry from the Preston Steam Navigation Company Ltd about reports of the removal of merchant officers from officers' internment camps.
  • Consideration of proposals for the reciprocal repatriation of interned British and Austro-Hungarian merchant seamen.

Proposed exchange of Austro-Hungarian consular officials, including:

  • Approval of proposals by the War Office and the Admiralty.
  • Questions regarding the exchange of Otto Schmidt and Albert Mau.
  • List of Austro-Hungarian, Austrian and British consular officials (in docket no.20419) to be considered for exchange.
  • Decision to wait for an approach from the Austro-Hungarian Government on the exchange of consular officials.

  • Enquiry about the possible repatriation of Otto Schmidt and Paul Terenzio, interned at Malta.

Internment of Austro-Hungarian subjects of Italian nationality, including:

  • Arrest and subsequent release of Peter Zergol at Belize, British Honduras.
  • Request by the Italian Government for the transfer from India to Italy of Edgardo Rossiger, Mario Buzdon and Giovanni Razzo; subsequent information that they had sailed for Europe on SS Catania, which had sunk off the coast of Calabria.
  • Agreement for Signor Raffaele Janni, detained at Malta, to be allowed to proceed to Italy.
  • Signora Antonietta Mihic: enquiry about her brother, Corrado Mihic; subsequent information that he had been interned in Trinidad, and had sailed to Boston following his release.

Miss Elizabeth Bruce, a British subject resident in Vienna: request for financial assistance; payments to her from the British Relief Fund.

Richard Siebenschein: report of his internment at Pietermaritzburg Camp in South Africa while travelling from India to the United Kingdom.

Mrs Arthur Green, a British subject resident at Reichenberg, Bohemia: payment of a sum of money to her from her husband via the American Embassy in Vienna.

Mrs Rosa Humphreys, a British subject resident in Vienna: arrangements for payments to her under the terms of her late husband's will.

Question of the repatriation of various interned Austrian subjects, including:

  • Arrest of Alfred Grohmann and Hans Seefelder at Salonica.
  • Decision to delay the repatriation on medical grounds of Alfred Grohmann, interned at Alexandra Palace.
  • Request from the Swedish Legation in London for the repatriation of Alfred Grohmann and Franz and John Brazzafolli, independent of any general scheme for prisoner repatriation and exchange.
  • Hans Seefelder: request for the return of property confiscated at the time of his arrest at Salonica; information that his property had been handed over to the French military authorities.
  • John Brazzafolli, interned at Alexndra Palace: letter to the Swedish Legation in London requesting assistance in obtaining his repatriation; agreement by the British Government for his repatriation to Holland via Gravesend.

Miss Muriel Wilson: request for the transmission of a power of attorney and a deed poll to Captain Arthur Stanley Wilson interned at Salzerbad Camp; request from Lord Nunburnholme of the Lord Lieutenant's Office for Captain Wilson's release.
