Description

Turkey. Prisoners, including:

Seizure by the Turkish authorities of the British Seamen's Home at Pera.

Proposal for a reciprocal agreement with the Turkish Government concerning the return of the personal effects of prisoners who die in enemy countries.

Protest by the Turkish Government about the arrest of Abdurrahman Sabbahy Bey at Mastai, Egypt, and his subsequent internment in Malta.

Death of Mr Nicholas Homsy at Aleppo: enquiries regarding his estate and the banks holding funds in his name.

Rassim Husni Effendi, former Turkish Consul in Manchester: permission for his repatriation to Turkey; petition from the Representative Armenian Committee of Manchester requesting that he should not be allowed to return to Turkey.

Request by Mrs Townshend for permission to join her husband, Major General Charles Townshend, interned at Constantinople, including:

  • Advice from the War Office that the grant of permission would set a precedent and could result in a demand for reciprocal treatment from the Turkish Government.
  • Subsequent recommendation by the War Office that decisions of this nature should be taken by the Foreign Office.
  • Permission from the Turkish Government for Mrs Townshend to join her husband.
  • Enquiries from Major General Townshend about arrangements for his wife's visit, and negotiations for his possible exchange with Turkish officials interned in India.
  • Telegram from Mrs Townshend to her husband, communicated via the American Embassy in Constantinople.
  • Permission for Mrs Townshend to travel through Bulgaria.
  • Decision not to allow Mrs Townshend to visit her husband, following a review of the case by the Foreign Office, and communication of this information to her husband by Mrs Townshend..
  • Refusal by the Austro-Hungarian authorities to allow Mrs Townshend to travel through Austro-Hungary.
  • Unwillingness of the Foreign Office to transmit a letter to Major General Townshend via the American Embassy in Constantinople.
  • Message from Major General Townshend saying that he expected to be allowed to return to the United Kingdom on parole.
  • Refusal by the Turkish authorities to allow Major General Townshend to return to England; application by him to be allowed to go to Spain.
  • Provision of funds for Major General Townshend from Messrs Henry S King and Company.
  • Decision not to allow the British Embassy building in Constantinople to be used for the internment of Major General Townshend.
  • Delivery of Major General Townshend's luggage from Bombay and Basra to the United Kingdom.
  • Award of Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath to Major General Townshend, published in the fifth supplement to The London Gazette of 17 October 1916.
  • Enquiries by Lady Townshend about the non-delivery of letters to her husband via the American Embassy in Constantinopole.
  • Mr Arthur Brooke: enquiry about the safety of his house and possessions at Pera; information that the lease of the house had been given up, and that his possessions had been placed in storage.
  • Claim by the Turkish Government for the payment of taxes on the British High School for Boys and the British Seamen's Hospital at Constantinople.
