Description

Turkey. Prisoners, including:

Mr Albert Drake: enquiry about the payment of rent due for his property in Bebek, and the payment of relief to an Ottoman Greek employee in Athens.

Major Mehmed Emir Hilmi Effendi, former aide-de-camp (ADC) to His Highness the Khedive Abbas Hilmi Pasha, interned at Malta, including:

  • Request by the Turkish authorities for Major Hilmi's status as an officer to be recognised.
  • Information that the Turkish Government had stopped the pay of Lieutenant Commander Clyfford Warren as a reprisal against the refusal of the British Government to recognise Major Hilmi's status.
  • Request in a letter from Major Hilmi for assistance from his former college at Oxford University.
  • Letter from Mrs H D Warren concerning the stoppage of pay to her husband.
  • Statement by the British authorities that Major Hilmi was being treated as an officer, but was not receiving officer's pay as he held no rank in the Turkish army at the time of his internment.

Removal of Allied civilians from Ourfa to Caserea, including:

  • Protest by the French Government about the treatment of French nationals in Turkey.
  • List of British civilians deported from Ourfa (in docket no.48151).
  • Mrs Mary Salmoné: enquiry about the whereabouts of her son, Mr Neville Salmoné, former employee of Sir John Jackson Ltd; request from Mr Salmoné, interned at Bey Shehir, for his mother to send him money.
  • Enquiry from Sir John Jackson Ltd about the whereabouts of Mr F Deal and other former employees of the company, with a list of their names (in docket no.158126); arrangements for sending money to former employees, and information on the remittance of funds.
  • List of British civilians transferred from Nigdeh to Konia (in docket no.79441).
  • List of British civilians interned at Bor, Akseray and Nev Shehir (in docket no.176579).
  • Miss Carrie Holloway: confirmation that her father, Mr W G Holloway, was interned at Bey Shehir, and message from Mr Holloway giving the names of other employees of Sir John Jackson Ltd interned in the camp.
  • Death of Zaffer Ali bin Emir Ali, a British Indian subject interned at Bor.
  • Report by the American Embassy at Constantinople on conditions in the camps at Nev Shehir and Ak-Seray in the Konia Vilayet [administrative district].
  • Appointment of Mr Wingate to assist in the provision of relief to British subjects in the district of Caeserea.
  • Doctor M Saadi Nejdet Bey, interned at St Clement's Camp in Malta: request for release under the terms of the Hague Convention; decision by the Army Council that he was not eligible for release.
  • Mr Stephanos Papdopoulos, a Cypriot refugee: claim for compensation as a British subject following his alleged mistreatment by the Turkish authorities.
  • Mr R L Naville: expenses claim in connection with negotiations for the release of Allied subjects detained at Ourfa.

Death of Mr Leonardo de Santi, former employee of the Office of Works at Constantinople: request by his widow, Mrs Mathilde de Santi, for the continuation of payment of his pension.

Mr Hugo Marinitsch, formerly attached to the British Embassy in Constantinople: request for a supply of pension forms.

Youssouf Effendi, a Turkish subject arrested at Tinour Hissar and interned at Malta, including:

  • Request by the Turkish authorities for his release.
  • Provision of a report on the circumstances of his arrest.
  • Arrest and internment at Choroum of Mr Edwin Palanga, as a reprisal by the Turkish authorities.

Request for information from the American Embassy in Constantinople, following reports of the alleged massacre of British and French prisoners by the Turks.

Canon Frank C Whitehouse: request for information on his financial position if he accepted the post of Army Chaplain.

Messrs Sydney Nowill and Company: realisation of the company's assets in Constantinople.
