Germany: Prisoners, including:

Mr F W Milmine: request for efforts to be made to secure the release and repatriation to the USA of his brother, Alexander Douglas Milimine, interned at Ruhleben Camp.

Mrs Marianne Hopf (née Thomson): letters requesting the transfer of her husband, Mr H W A Hopf to Switzerland on health grounds, or his repatriation to Transvaal in the Union of South Africa; attempts to obtain a British passport for him. Includes an extract from The Daily Mail of 8 September 1916 reporting on Mr Hopf's sentence to solitary confinement for a month.

Request for information on the internment of British civilians in Germany, following reports of a public meeting to be held proposing the internment of all German civilians in the Glasgow district.

Mr H Griffiths Newton: enquiries from his wife and from Mr H Fitchen of the Kingsway Press Limited following reports of Mr Newton having been placed under special arrest at Ruhleben Camp.

Investigations following reports of the proposed exchange of Australian and New Zealand prisoners at Ruhleben for a similar number of German prisoners from the colonies.

Mr H Cotterell: enquiries about the possible release of his son Harry Dougan Catterell, interned at Ruhleben.

Mrs Nellie Fuchs: enquiry about the issue of a British passport to her husband, Mr Carl August Fuchs, a naturalised British subject detained in Germany at the outbreakof the war.

  • Mr F Nunn: request for assistance in securing the release on health grounds of his son, Mr Ronald L Nunn, and enquiry about regulations governing the sending of money to prisoners; letter from Mr Ronald Nunn on the exchange rate for remittances.
  • German regulations on the rate of exchange for remittances.
  • Mr Charles Moore: request to be allowed to send money to his son, Mr R V Moore, via Holland.
  • Mr Arthur Catty: permission to send money to his sons via Holland; provision of information on the poor rate of exchange being given, and suggestion of reprisals; permission to send coupons instead of money; subsequent enquiry as coupons were found to be not valid in neutral countries.
  • Mr Albert Lowe: permission to send money to his brother, Mr William James Lowe, via Holland.
  • Mr E Pickering: advice for him to send money to his son, Cyril Pickering, via Holland.
  • Formal representations made to the German Government by the Foreign Office on the use of pre-war rates of exchange for remittances sent to prisoners.
  • Recommendation for reprisals against the German authorities, and for future remittances to be sent in German currency.
  • Parliamentary question by Mr Malcolm on the unfair rate of exchange for English money given to British prisoners in Germany.
  • Mr S M Kennedy: request for advice on the best method of sending money to his brother; provision of information on obtaining a better exchange rate from remittances sent through Messrs Scheuleer and Sons of the Hague in Holland.
