The Planning, Regional Plans Directorate was set up in 1973 soon after the reorganisation of the Planning Divisions in 1971 to 1972. It took on the responsibilities previously undertaken by a number of divisions of the former Planning Service B Directorate.
The Planning, Regional Plans Directorate was primarily responsible for regional economic and technical planning advice within the national framework for regional planning and monitoring assessment of regional strategies. These included rural planning development policy and Green Belt policy and procedures. It also co-ordinated planning proposals and policies into a national framework. Town development and the Industrial Selection Scheme was also administered under the Town Development Act 1952 together with household projections and questions of grants and loans for the acquisition of land for housing and industry. These duties were undertaken by five sub-divisions within the directorate.
In 1975 the directorate was disbanded. Its responsibilities were redistributed across the Department of the Environment and incorporated into the work of other directorates, such as the Planning, Sport and Countryside Directorate and the Development Planning and Regional Strategies Directorate.
