This series contains the Department of the Environment's annual report for the year 1 April 1982 to 31 March 1983.
The report was the first annual report to have been produced by the Department. It was produced at the initiative of the Secretary of State, Michael Heseltine, as an experiment in public accountability. Although the experiment was successful in its own terms, as well as winning a commendation from the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy for the report, it did not generate the interest that had been hoped for and so far has not been repeated.
