Description (What the record is about)
-
This series consists of files of the Unemployment Assistance Board and its successors illustrating the range of duties and responsibilities imposed under the 1934 Unemployment Assistance Act and extended under subsequent legislation.
The majority of files deal with the day-to-day work of the board, illustrating its policies and procedures necessary to implement its functions. Some files illustrate the varying aspects of assessment and the methods of calculating the amount of assistance payable in accordance with the Scale Rates.
Subjects covered include the general administration of the transitional payments and unemployment assistance schemes; unemployment welfare: old age, widows', blind persons' and supplementary pensions; vagrancy services; and other aspects of the work of the boards, including agency work for other departments.
This series also contains files covering acts and bills which have a bearing on the board's work, and the cooperation of the board with voluntary organisations and Local Authorities and some private office papers.
Some of the earlier files contain correspondence of the Board of Customs and Excise relating to old age pensions and of the Transitional Payments and Unemployment Insurance Divisions of the Ministry of Labour.
