The Old Age Pension Acts 1908 and 1936 provided that appeals against decisions of Local Pension Committees could be made to the central pension authority which was originally the Local Government Board. In 1919 the Ministry of Health became the central pension authority. In 1944 the Ministry of National Insurance took over the function under the National Insurance Act 1944. The National Assistance Act 1948 abolished Local Pension Committees and transferred their functions to the National Assistance Board. Provision was made under the Act for appeals to be referred to Appeal Tribunals constituted under the Act.
