Under the Legal Aid and Advice Act 1949 and the Legal Aid and Solicitors (Scotland) Act 1949 the National Assistance Board has the duty of enquiring into the financial circumstances of persons applying for legal aid and of assessing the amount of their contribution to the Legal Aid fund. The results of the Board's investigations are sent to the relevant local committee of the Law Society.
