The Chemistry Division was formed with the conception of the new Research Department in 1951 to control the operation of the various regional laboratories. In 1954, the division was renamed Chemical Services and remained until it was divided in 1963 into the Chemical Research Division and the Regional Scientific Services Division. The "Regional" part of the latter's name had been dropped by 1968. In 1971 the two divisions were placed under the control of the Manager, Scientific Services.
