Factories, collieries, steel works and other bodies which could expect to send and receive large amounts of traffic by rail would usually have their own sidings laid on their property. These sidings would be linked to a nearby railway line. The use of such sidings was governed by private siding agreements between the railway company concerned and the owner of the sidings. These agreements covered a wide variety of items including: Payments to the railway company for maintenance work.Level of rates to be charged for the traffic using the siding. An undertaking by the siding owner to pay taxes.Payment of rent by the siding owner for use of railway owned lines.Arrangements for termination of the agreement.Shunting arrangements.Details of ownership of lines and boundary points.
