These are records of the British Transport Historical Records Office at Porchester Road, Paddington, while under the successive administration of the British Transport Commission, 1951 to 1962, the British Railways Board, 1963 to 1972, and the Public Record Office, 1972 to 1977. The series includes registers of accessions, attendance, enquiries and correspondence, together with some material concerning records at the Branch offices at Edinburgh and York. There are also some earlier papers of the British Transport Commission and the Great Western Railway Company dealing with preservation of records and the establishment of a Records Office.

The British Transport Commission Historical Records Office was set up in July 1951 at 66 Porchester Road, London W2, to preserve and make available the historical records of the railway, canal, dock, hotel and road transport concerns of the British Transport Commission. Branch offices were established in York and Edinburgh.
