The material in this series had not been sorted when the PRO assumed custody of British Transport Historical Records and although it was apparent that some of it duplicated material which had been classified as Railway Clearing House Minutes and Reports (RCH 1 and RCH(Y) 1, now RAIL 1080 and 1081) it was decided that all the material should be retained.
-
Administrative / biographical background (Historical or biographical information about the creator of the record and the context of its creation)
-
The Railway Clearing House retained its own corporate identity until 24 May 1954, when it became vested in the British Transport Commission (S1 1954/139). It then continued as a department of the commission until the latter body was abolished in 1962 and was finally disbanded on 31 March 1963. The Railway Clearing House had provided a secretariat for many of the committees of the Second World War Railway Executive Committee and, although it did not become legally a part of the commission until 1954, it worked in partnership with it and its executives from their beginnings and the provision of secretarial services to the main committees of the commission continued.
